The Little Black Book of Wedding Vendors ~ By Style Me Pretty

We were happy to be invited recently to participate in the Style Me Pretty, Little Black Book of Wedding Vendors (aka, the LBB), which is a very small, nationwide collection, of boutique wedding vendors that specialize in eclectic, artful, and detail-oriented wedding services.

May 15th, 2008, is the scheduled launch date for the Sedona listing.

Part of what makes the LBB so refreshing is that it's not just another website crammed full of links to wedding vendor websites from A to Z. It's an invitation only listing, limited to 3 vendors per service per market. Our listing will be for the Sedona, Phoenix and Scottsdale, and Las Vegas markets.

Upon skimming through the website state-by-state, we were humbled to realize what great company we're among by being listed there, many of which are friends of ours and whose work we really admire.

Thanks to Abby and Michelle at Style Me Pretty for the invitation. We gratefully and humbly accept :)

The Foundation Workshop 6 ~ Dallas, Texas

Photojournalism has become a great influence on wedding photography in the past few years, and is being sought out more and more by brides and grooms alike. Many people categorize photojournalism simply as ' candid photos,' which is partly true about the style, but photojournalism is really so much more. Imagine trying to tell an entire story in as few pictures as possible, and those pictures also need to be artful. It is much more difficult than many people would think!

The Foundation Workshop, started six years ago by Huy Nguyen, a former Dallas Morning News photographer and current member of F8 Studio, was formed in order to teach photographers more about the photojournalism experience.

My assignment was to show up at the McKinney, Texas community center two days in a row and find the story. Without knowing ahead of time what may or may not be going on there, I slowly got to know the regulars, and found many willing and unwilling subjects to take pictures of! It was invigorating! :)

I ( Andrew) especially want to thank my team: Huy Nguyen (team leader), Mark Adams (mentor), Sergio (mentor), Becca Spears (assistant), and then also my fellow students, Erwin Darmali, Joe G., Leigh Miller, and Jesseca Hattey, for sharing their artistic vision, constructive criticism, words of edification, and friendship. I won't forget any of you! Also, thanks to Ben Chrisman, who came to my assignment location on the first day and shared some of his vision with me. :)

Here's a link to the final slideshow that my team leaders put together for the work I shot during those two days. It's a Quicktime movie, and should load pretty quickly.

Becca said on her blog: " Andrew Mejia covered the daily happenings at a rec center in McKinney. Andrew has a natural eye for composition. I could see him layering and anticipating moments where all of the elements of the graphic image and peak action come together (see the first picture below). Andrew's biggest hurdle after his first day of shooting was feeling comfortable getting close to his subject. He was hindered by the common fear of not wanting to invade a subject's personal space. We basically said, "you've got to get over that." The thing is, there couldn't be anyone nicer than Andrew. I'm sure the general public would be absolutely fine with him invading their personal space. Take a look at these two wonderful images. Just love them. When the first picture came up onto the screen at our final presentations, there was a sweeping cheer. A bunch of photographers in a room know how hard it is to get a complex layered image like this."

Featured on the Food Network Channel

On Sunday night at 9pm MST ( mountain standard time), check out the Food Network to see our good friend and amazing cake artist, Andrea Blaut on the Food Network Challenge! We're so proud of her and not at all surprised that she'd be on national TV. Her cakes are absolutely amazing and we think she's one of the best cake artists in the country. The Food Network must obviously agree by having her on the Food Network Challenge.

In the last few weeks we've been working with them to get one or two of our images on the episode as well, so this is the first time our images will be on national television!

Congratulations to Andrea; we can't wait to see you tonight on the tube! Hopefully baby Kaiden will be asleep so we can watch without interruption... :)

Here are a few images we've shot of her fabulous cakes. Her attention to detail is amazing. Most of our clients have a hard time cutting into the cakes during the cake cut because it's so beautiful. The cherry on top is that they taste amazing as well!

If you get a chance on this short notice, be sure to tune in... Enjoy the images!

Andrea won Silver Medal in the ACF's 2007 Culinary Competition for this fun cake. I had to post this image as well because our baby Kaiden is in it checking out the cake with Andrea. Too cute!

Phoenix Bride and Groom Magazine ~ An Affair to Remember, Scottsdale, Arizona

As we reported in an earlier post, celebrity event designer, and all-around wedding anything superhero, Scott Corridan, came to Scottsdale, Arizona, to speak about creatively meeting the dynamic challenges of the wedding market. Corridan, also of HGTV's Design Star fame, shared his heart and his philosophy with all in attendance.

This event, which took place at the majestically rustic Los Cedros Arabian horse stables, was full of amazing charm nothing short of old Andalucia, Spain.

We want to extend a big thanks to Fran Samuel, the publisher of Phoenix Bride and Groom magazine, for hosting such a fun and interesting event!

View more images from the event in the slideshow here.

Enjoy the images!

Brides.com and WPJA ~ Award-Winning Photos

It looks like we placed two images in another contest. This contest was put on by Brides.com in combination with the Wedding Photojournalist Association, aka, the WPJA.

Click here to see the contest gateway page on Brides.com.

Here's what the premise of the contest was per the Brides.com website:

" Inspired by the pictures our editors have been seeing—images that remind us how poignant and precious (and funny!) every wedding is—Brides asked members of the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) to enter their work in our first-ever photo contest.

Pictures were divided up into 10 categories, and after poring over hundreds of submissions, we chose the work in each category that best captured the magic and memories of this day of days.

From hipster groomsmen to precious little attendants, these photographers were able to capture the unique feeling of these couple's wedding days with an especially artistic eye."

All images copyright 2007, Sedona Bride / Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

All images copyright 2007, Sedona Bride / Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

The WPJA also has it featured on their site. Click here to see the contest gateway page on the WPJA.

All images copyright 2007, Sedona Bride / Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

Here's what the WPJA judges had to say about our winning images:

All images copyright 2007, Sedona Bride / Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

" JUDGES COMMENTS: Images should make us feel something. A wedding presents an entire day of emotions. But a sensitive photographer sees the world in a unique way – shooting images we can feel and taste. Look at this image long enough and you can feel her hand (or his) curled through your own fingers. That is the “magic” of great photography.

The photographer has chosen to concentrate on the details. They have played off of the bouquet to accentuate the flowers in the bride's dress yet still captured a sweet moment between the bride and groom."

All images copyright 2007, Sedona Bride / Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

" JUDGES COMMENTS: There is no doubt this scene has been repeated thousands of times, yet, this is the first I've ever seen it. These are the images we know exist, the moments that pass by in a glance, but until a sensitive photographer sees and records it, it is almost as though they have never happened."

A big congratulations to the WPJA and Brides.com for their collaboration, which calls attention to outstanding wedding photography worldwide!

The Buchineko Keychain Camera ~ Superheadz Ina Babylon, Japan

While Katrina was in Japan shooting a wedding in Kobe ( images coming soon!), she had an opportunity to make a few purchases at one of the cool little boutique stores you find around any Japanese mall or shopping area.

Check out this cool little keychain camera she found, complete with a cute little role of 110 Agfa film. Pronounced " boo-chee-neh-koh", referring to a cat, there is a cute little graphic of a kitty on it. Neko is the Japanese word for cat..

As I uncovered the origin of this little gem, which measures a mere 1"x1"x1", I came across the Tokyo Lomography people, which must have some connection ( I can't read the Japanese language garble on my computer screen to be able to tell...) to the Superheadz Ina Babylon folks.

We'll post some images from this camera when we get a chance to use it at a wedding or other... BTW, is there a bride and groom out there that would let us photograph their entire wedding with one of these?? It would be really cool!!

Email and Web Server Crash ~ October 26th thru October 28th

We apologize for those of you that have tried to contact us or view our website over this past weekend! As luck would have it, on Friday afternoon both our email server and our web servers crashed hard. But kudos to our wonderful web guy, who has kept us crash-free for nearly 4 years, and who also had us up and running in two days! Client images were never in jeopardy as we keep redundant backups.

If you have not received any replies from emails that you may have sent during this time period, please resend! We want to hear from you!

Blessings and peace!

Peter, Bjorn, and John ~ Young Folks

A short time ago a buddy of ours passed along this YouTube video of a fun European band, so we thought we'd share it with you... :)

Not only is the song pretty cool, but the video is really neat too. It's reminiscent of the old Johnny Quest animation.

Enjoy!

Signature Books ~ Sedona Bride Studio Highlights

Recently we posted the images from Leslie and Rob's wedding, where we mentioned the fabulous signature book we made for them of the engagement pictures.

It was such an overwhelming success, and the guests had a lot of fun inscribing their ' best wishes' for the bride and groom.

Here are some additional images of the album after their guests had a chance to sign it...

Stereolab with Herbie Mann ~ One Note Samba

A long time favorite of Andrew and Katrina's, Stereolab prooves over and over with each release that jazz is not dead!

Stereolab takes it even one step further by cutting this track with renowned jazz master and flutist Herbie Mann.

Herbie Mann gave new life to the flute in his jazz compositions, and is the original beat hippie. Other musicians, like Jethro Tull, went on to define their own genres of rock with this influence.

Back to Stereolab, the albums Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Dots and Loops won't disappoint!

Enjoy!

Blessings and peace!

We just finished putting together a slideshow for some of the album options we offer. Currently we offer Mini Books, Coffee Table Books, and Heirloom Albums.

The Mini Book is a 5x5 book of our favorite 100 images. It's small enough that it can fit into a purse, and is a great way to show the story of your day. Typically we have more than 100 images that are our faves, so it's really hard to get it down to 100!

All images copyright 2006, Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

The Coffee Table Book is a custom printed book with satin pages, a glossy book cover, and is most like the type of fine art book you could buy at a nice bookstore.

All images copyright 2006, Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.
All images copyright 2006, Katrina Wallace Photography, LLC.

The Heirloom Album is a generally a leather-bound ' tome' that is also custom designed. We do offer metallic covers as well. One option is to have an image from the wedding featured on the cover, as well as the bride and groom's names and wedding date embossed into it. The pages are thick and durable, and are actually photographic prints that are mounted onto a rigid paper ( pressboard). These albums are amazing to see and hold!
